mcquarrie droids c-3po r2-d2 tatooine painting origins

One of McQuarrie’s earliest and most iconic compositions — two droids trudging across an endless desert landscape. This painting established the scale and desolation of Tatooine while making the audience instantly empathize with two mechanical characters. McQuarrie’s C-3PO design here is notably sleeker and more androgynous than the final film version, drawing heavily from the robot Maria in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. The painting was instrumental in Fox’s decision to greenlight the film, proving that Lucas’s bizarre cast of characters could carry real emotional weight.
