cantwell x-wing starfighter model origins

Colin Cantwell built this concept model in his apartment, working from George Lucas’s rough sketches. The distinctive split-wing design — the X-Wing’s most iconic feature — was actually a happy accident. Cantwell needed the wings to separate so the model could be photographed from different angles without the wings blocking each other. When Lucas saw the open-wing configuration, he immediately recognized its visual power and made it a canonical feature of the design. This model directly led to the filming miniature used in the original 1977 film.
