cantwell star-destroyer imperial model origins

The Star Destroyer’s intimidating wedge shape was one of Colin Cantwell’s most influential contributions to the Star Wars visual language. Lucas wanted a ship that conveyed overwhelming military power in a single silhouette. Cantwell’s solution — a stark, angular dagger shape — became one of the most recognizable spacecraft in cinema history. The opening shot of A New Hope, where the Star Destroyer’s seemingly endless hull fills the screen, was made possible by the clarity of Cantwell’s original concept.
