Darth Vader — Concept Painting

McQuarrie’s concept painting of Darth Vader established the character’s visual identity: the flowing black cape, the angular helmet, the featureless mask that would become the face of cinematic villainy. Lucas had described Vader as a dark lord who needed breathing apparatus to survive, and McQuarrie synthesized samurai armor, Nazi helmets, and industrial gas masks into something entirely new.
