Ralph McQuarrie’s painting of the twin sunset on Tatooine is perhaps the single most important piece of concept art in Star Wars history. This painting, along with a handful of others, is what convinced 20th Century Fox to greenlight the film. The image captured something Lucas had struggled to convey in words alone: the sense of vast loneliness, of a young person gazing at an impossibly distant horizon and yearning for something more. The binary sunset scene, directly inspired by this painting, became one of cinema’s most iconic moments.
