One of the most ambitious environments in The Phantom Menace, the underwater Gungan city required Chiang to invent an entirely organic architectural language. Drawing from bioluminescent deep-sea creatures, Art Nouveau, and cellular biology, he created structures that appeared grown rather than built — translucent bubble-like buildings connected by flowing organic pathways. The concept represented a dramatic departure from the hard-edged industrial aesthetic of the Original Trilogy, signaling that the Prequel era would explore new visual territories.
