The planet-spanning city of Coruscant was Doug Chiang’s most ambitious conceptual challenge: visualize an entire world consumed by architecture. His concept paintings layered thousands of years of construction into a single frame — Art Deco spires rising alongside brutalist government blocks, ancient temples buried beneath chrome towers. The vertical scale was key: Chiang’s paintings showed bottomless canyons between buildings, suggesting a city that had been building upward for millennia. These paintings established the visual vocabulary for every depiction of Coruscant that followed.
