McQuarrie’s Dagobah paintings created a world that felt ancient and alive — twisted trees draped in fog, bioluminescent swamp water, an atmosphere thick with mystery. The challenge was designing a planet where a Jedi Master could hide in plain sight for decades. McQuarrie’s solution was a place so primordial and overgrown that technology seemed irrelevant. The misty, organic aesthetic he established for Dagobah became one of the most atmospheric environments in all of Star Wars, directly informing the set design for The Empire Strikes Back.
