The All Terrain Armored Transport began as a sketch inspired by container port cranes that Joe Johnston observed at the Oakland docks. The four-legged walking tank — part elephant, part mechanical nightmare — became the centerpiece of the Battle of Hoth and one of the most iconic vehicles in science fiction. Johnston’s drawings meticulously worked out the walking gait, the head-mounted blaster cannons, and the troop deployment mechanics, turning an impossible concept into something that felt disturbingly real.
